Podcast Title: Goal Setting for 2025
Welcome to the Real Estate Espresso Podcast, your morning shout out to what’s new in the world of real estate investing. I’m your host, Victor Menasche. We’re coming to you live from the 2025 y street capital goals retreat on board Norwegian cruise line. We’re on shore in Bermuda, after spending two days at sea hold up in one of the nightclubs with a pair in hand working hard on getting clear on our values.
Turns out, setting goals is something that very few people do. In fact, less than 4% of the population set goals, and for those that do, only a small percentage of them actually achieve them. So what is the purpose of setting a goal? Why do it anyway? Well, quite simply, if you don’t have an intention, then any decision will do. Decisions will get made in your life no matter what. Decisions will be made by time, maybe by Charles Darwin, meaning survival of the fittest, by the path of least resistance, by nature or by you. Even making no decision is a decision. Unless you make the decision, it will get made regardless.
The key to setting goals that will help you is to point you in the right direction that aligns with your intention. Before you can do that effectively, you need to get clear on your values. The definition of success is completely secular, it’s in the eye of the beholder. People often set goals that are not in harmony with their values, and as a result, they end up experiencing profound tension in their lives. They wonder why they’re not achieving their goals, or maybe worse, they are achieving their goals and sacrificing the things they hold dear in their lives, like perhaps their relationships.
Once you’re clear on your values, then setting goals is actually much easier, but getting clear on your values is not as easy as it sounds. It requires deep introspection. Stephen Covey said that the best is the victim of the good. In that context, you should never aspire to do just good things. The problem with good things is that they’re just good, they can be seductive…
