AMA – Farming Coop Investment
Welcome to The Real Estate Espresso Podcast, your Morning Shot of what’s new in the world of real estate investing. I’m your host Victor Menasce. Today is another AMA episode, that is, ask me anything. I love to answer your questions and if you have a question you think is going to be of broad interest, send it in. I’ll answer it live on the air. Send your questions to Victor at victorjM.com. That’s Victor at victor jm.com. Today’s question comes from Juanita and she writes “I follow your podcast and I’m a US citizen. During the volatility caused by tariffs, I’m examining ways to reduce my consumer exposure to the trade war. I’m thinking of buying into a farming co-op. I’ve been feeling global prices rise in my grocery bill and I’m trying to find creative ways to get out.”
She further asked two questions. Number one: “Do you think a farming co-op is a good temporary shield to the current trade war?” And number two: “How would you evaluate a real estate cop purchase into a farming co-op to see if it’s economically making sense to ride out the trade war?” Well, Juanita, this is a great question.
If you want to insulate yourself from consumer price shocks then my advice is to think like an investor, not a consumer. I’ll come back to that notion later. It’s a central idea, though of my response. The fact is we don’t know if it’s a good idea or not. It comes down to understanding the supply-demand situation for the very specific products in the presence of tariffs, and the alignment of those supply contracts with the timing of the harvest. We’re talking about timing the effects of the trade war with the harvest and transportation.
