BOM – “Tiny Habits” by BJ Fogg
Welcome to the Real Estate Espresso Podcast, your morning shot of what’s new in the world of real estate investing. I’m your host, Victor Menasce. On the first day of each month, we review the book of the month. In order for a book to be considered for the book of the month, it must meet a straightforward criteria: the book has to be impactful enough that it could potentially change your life or your perspective on the world. Whether it does or not is entirely up to you. But, if you internalize its messages, you have a realistic shot at lasting growth.
Our book this month, “Tiny Habits” by B.J. Fogg, certainly meets these criteria. B.J. Fogg, a professor at Stanford University, provides invaluable insight into the art and science of forming habits in his book. Through focusing on small, incremental, manageable steps rather than huge sweeping efforts, he introduces a novel approach for making lasting changes.
The book was published in 2020 and it promises readers the power to transform their lives through the establishment of tiny, achievable habits. In this episode, I am going to explore the main themes, the strengths of his work, and some of the broader implications.
I’ll also provide some context, touching on some personal experiences in the field of habit formation and relating these to Fogg’s work. Furthermore, I will share what I learned from my mentor, Dr. Nito Kuben, about habits and the impact they have on our lives, and how this ties in with the core concept of Tiny Habits – the snowball effect of small specific behaviors practiced consistently.
I will break down Fogg’s three main components for habit formation – Motivation, ability, and prompts – and share some real-life examples to demonstrate these concepts. In addition to this, I will delve into how the belief that a change is too big often leads to procrastination and how Fogg suggests overcoming this hurdle.
Finally, I will discuss some of the strengths of the book, including its accessibility and practicality, its grounding in scientific research, and the overall value it presents for personal development.
As you think about that, have an awesome rest of your day. Go make some great things happen. And we’ll talk again tomorrow.
