Could AI Threaten My Job As A Developer?
Welcome, today we’ll explore a rather intriguing question in the AI (Artificial Intelligence) terrain – “Could AI threaten my job as a developer?” This question may have crossed your mind, especially if you’re in the tech or development sector, or even as an observer of AI advancements. In this blogpost, we’ll assess the state of AI and their interplay with our jobs, using examples from my personal experience as your guide.
AI in Content Creation
Artificial Intelligence has made momentous strides in various areas, not least in content creation. As a podcast host, I get asked whether I’ve been leveraging AI for the Real Estate Espresso Podcast. The short answer is no. The creativity and production of my show remain a 100% human endeavor, myself and my team. The only tinge of AI we’ve used is for brainstorming future show topics, and even then, the topics are not taken verbatim. Nonetheless, when it comes to content generated from AI tools, the quality widely hinges upon how you pose your questions.
AI as a Brainstorming Tool
During one of my experiments, I sought ideas from Microsoft’s Copilot for an eight-acre land development project. I found the AI to be reasonably resourceful. Some intriguing examples of business ideas it provided included a family-friendly restaurant, a cozy coffee shop, a convenience store, a fitness center, a community center, a co-working space, retail shops, pet services, outdoor amenities, healthcare services, and an entertainment venue.
Evaluating AI’s Contribution: Copilot
Microsoft’s Copilot handled the task admirably, suggesting subdividing according to local zoning laws, creating separate lots for different businesses. It also pointed out the importance of ensuring proper road access, utilities, and necessary infrastructure. Yet, I found the answer to be quite generic and somewhat superficial. Don’t get me wrong, the fact that I even got a half-coherent answer from an AI tool is astonishing. But in terms of truly complementing the high school across the street or other contextual specifics, I felt the AI fell short.
AI And Parking Solutions
As a follow-up, I asked it about the parking requirements for the plot. Here, the AI stumbled a bit, providing a rather long but generic answer. However, it did suggest parking ratios for different business types and proposed considering shared parking – a solution that could function in cases of businesses with different peak hours.
Concluding Remarks
I must restate, AI is currently in its infancy, and the quality of output we are experiencing is quite advanced for its developmental stage. The practical implications of AI are growing and present exciting prospects. While AI’s answers may not hit the bull’s eye every time currently, progress is remarkably evident. Thus, could AI threaten my job as a developer? – at this point, I’d say unlikely. But it is essential to keep an open mind towards the impact of AI on our professional lives as this technology continues to mature.
